You did it! Your braces are off, and your smile looks wonderful. We want to make sure it stays that way. Because your teeth have a "memory" of where they used to be, they need a little help staying in their new positions. That’s where your retainer comes in. It’s like a supportive friend for your teeth, making sure they stay exactly where we put them.
The Different Types of Retainers
Every smile is different, so we’ll work together to choose the retainer that fits your life best.
- Vivera™ retainers: These are high-quality clear retainers that look a lot like Invisalign® aligners. They are very discreet and fit right over your teeth. Most people won’t even know you’re wearing them.
- Traditional Wire Hawley Retainers: These have a thin metal wire that goes across the front of your teeth. They are very durable and easy for us to adjust if your teeth need a bit of extra guidance.
- Fixed (Permanent) Retainers: These are small, thin wires bonded to the back of your teeth. You don’t have to worry about taking them in or out because they stay in place all the time.
Caring for Your Retainer
We want your journey to be as easy as possible. Here are a few tips to keep things simple:
- Keep it safe: If your retainer is removable, always pop it in its case when you aren't wearing it.
- Keep it clean: Gently brush your retainer with a soft toothbrush to keep it fresh.
- Flossing with a fixed retainer: If you have a permanent wire, we’ll show you how to use a floss threader. It takes a little extra practice, but it's a great way to keep your gums healthy.

My son (and I) have loved the many years of working with Dr Yoon. Since we just had his braces completely removed, I am looking at the perfect bite and alignment. We started with an underbite and concern for crowded teeth. We went through expanders, partial braces, a permanent retainer then full braces and now a regular retainer. The staff is always pleasant and professional. Dr. Yoon is extremely knowledgeable and communicates his plan well. We are delighted with the whole office experience and, of course, the results.
My child received awesome care from Dr. Yoon and his staff. Everyone is really friendly. Every time you visit, you will never feel uncomfortable. Dr. Yoon is very knowledgeable, and he and his staff will answer any questions you have about dental care, braces, retainers, etc. It is expensive, but the money is certainly worth it and not wasted as you will most likely have a great experience and better teeth (and the staff are very open and transparent about payment options to do what is best for you). I highly recommend Dr. Yoon and his staff for getting braces! I went on a consultation since I was getting braces a second time. My mom and I were shocked at how the consultation went. They scanned, analyzed, and took photos of my teeth to then go over what I needed and for how long. I had my braces on for almost 9 months and with each visit, I felt cared for and informed on my teeth. I was also surprised with how my retainers were made. I expected it to be like the first dentist I went to, using a thick paste to create a mold. Here they don’t do that. Since your teeth are scanned they use a 3D printer for your retainers (if I’m not mistaken). Though my insurance (Maryland physicians care) is not accepted, going here for dental care is worth every penny!
